Quick verdict

JobStep turns one resume into a version per posting, and keeps the record of which went where.

JobStep is the strongest fit for a candidate who applies often enough that rewriting every application by hand has become the bottleneck. The free plan is usable from the first day rather than a locked preview, and the paid tier is what turns a finished resume into one version per job. A candidate who applies through a network, or who wants the rate before creating an account, will get less out of it than the feature list suggests.

Not for you if you only want the free tools. The score and the templates carry a search on their own, and the parts that make JobStep worth paying for are the rewrites and the letters.

How JobStep scored

Resume building and scoring4.6/5
Job-specific tailoring4.5/5
ATS readiness4.2/5
Application tracking and job suggestions4.3/5
Price and terms3.9/5

Why trust these scores: the overall 4.4 weights these five at 30% resume building and scoring, 25% job-specific tailoring, 20% ATS readiness, 15% application tracking and job suggestions and 10% price and terms. The build and the tailoring take the largest shares because they decide whether the document that reaches a recruiter is the right one for the posting in front of it. The scoring leans on published text wherever published text exists, which covers the country requirement list, the section breakdown and the retention periods. Where nothing is published, the figure follows the worked examples the company puts on its own resume page and the precision of its claims, since a reviewer outside the account has no sample of their own to read. No vendor can pay for a score. Read how we rate.

What we like

  • The guided build fills in the sections a country expects instead of leaving you an empty layout
  • The score names the sections it weighs, so the weakest part of the resume is visible before you send it
  • Tailoring changes are proposed from your own answers and wait for approval before they land
  • The tracker keeps the resume, the letter and the application record attached to one entry
  • The free plan covers the score, the templates and the tracker, so the workflow can be tested before paying

Watch out for

  • The paid plan rates are only shown inside the app, so a rate cannot be compared before an account exists
  • ATS compatibility is the company's claim, with no outside parse test published to check it against
  • Downloading a resume or a cover letter closes the money-back window, as does tracking more than ten jobs
  • Job suggestions are not offered in every country
  • A public application page stays reachable from search engines until the setting that permits it is switched off

How we rated JobStep

A resume tool is easy to demonstrate and harder to check. The two parts that decide an application, how a document parses and how closely it matches one posting, both happen behind a login, so this assessment works from what JobStep publishes about itself: its product pages, its terms, and its privacy, security and refund policies. We do not run a trial account of our own, and every figure below keeps a named source with the date we checked it. Those sources are listed at the end.

The five criteria that follow are weighted toward the two that decide whether the right document reaches a recruiter. Each one is scored against what the company puts on the record, and each score is explained in the section that carries it.

Resume building and scoring

JobStep does not begin with a blank template. It asks a set of questions, applies the section order and level of detail it keeps for your target market, and turns the answers into a draft you can edit section by section. The company says those country requirements are predefined and reviewed by recruiters, which is the part of the product a reader can least check from outside and the part that matters most to anyone applying outside the market they were educated in.

The score is what gives the build a direction. It is calculated from your target market, career stage, length of roles and career history, and it breaks down into personal details, structure, summary, work experience, education and skills, so an overall figure arrives next to the specific sections holding it back. JobStep pairs that with an assistant that explains each recommendation before applying it, and with an editor where you approve or rewrite the change and then export a PDF.

4.6 for resume building and scoring. The guided build and the section-level breakdown are the parts of the product with the fullest public description, and they are also what a job seeker uses before any payment is made.

Job-specific tailoring

Tailoring is the paid half of the workflow and the reason the tool exists. Paste a job description and JobStep compares it with your resume, picks out the keywords and skills the employer is asking for, and proposes a version that answers them. The company states that the changes are drawn from facts you supplied, that you review and approve each one, and that the finished file should be something you could explain in an interview.

The same posting feeds the cover letter, which is generated to match the resume rather than kept as a separate document you have to hold in sync by hand. Tailoring on its own is not unusual. What is less common is having the letter and the resume move together from one description, which is also what stops the two from contradicting each other inside the same application.

4.5 for job-specific tailoring. The workflow is documented from the paste to the export and the approval step is built into it, although the quality of any single rewrite is something only your own reading of the result can settle.

ATS readiness

An applicant tracking system is the first reader most applications get, and JobStep builds for it: clean structure, standard headings and machine-readable text, with the company naming Greenhouse, Lever and Workday as systems its templates parse correctly in. Anyone who has watched a two-column design come out of a parser as scrambled text will recognise why that matters.

What is not published is an outside test. The templates carry a percentage badge on the resume page and the compatibility claim comes from the company, so a reader has the design choices to inspect and no third-party parse result to weigh them against. That is a limit on what can be confirmed from outside rather than a mark against the templates themselves.

4.2 for ATS readiness. The structural choices are the right ones and the named systems make the claim specific, but the badge numbers are the vendor’s own and no independent parse test is on the record.

Application tracking and job suggestions

Every application you build lands in one dashboard, with status, deadlines and follow-ups kept together instead of spread across a spreadsheet. The resume you sent and the letter that went with it stay attached to the entry, which saves the most time weeks later when a recruiter replies and you need to know which version they read.

JobStep also scans new postings each week and scores them against your resume, and the company states plainly that this part is not available in every country. Applications can additionally be published as a public page carrying recruiter engagement analytics. That page is visible to anyone who has the link and can be indexed by search engines until you switch it off, so it is worth a deliberate decision rather than an accepted default.

4.3 for application tracking and job suggestions. The tracker is complete and clearly described, while the suggestion feed is the feature with the widest gap in where it works.

Price and terms

JobStep starts on a free plan covering the resume score, AI resume creation, the templates and the job tracker. Tailoring to a posting, cover letter generation and unlimited downloads sit on the paid side, and the rates for those plans are quoted inside the app at signup rather than on a public page, so there is no published number to weigh against another tool before you register.

The commercial terms are otherwise specific. A seven-day money-back guarantee covers a first purchase, and the same page sets out when it does not apply: downloading a resume, a tailored resume or a cover letter, or tracking more than ten jobs, counts as having used the product. Cancelling leaves access open until the current billing period ends. On the data side, documents are held in EU regions, the privacy policy states that what you upload is not used to train the models behind the service, and retention runs from thirty days for a deleted account to seven years for payment records.

3.9 for price and terms. The free plan covers real ground and the guarantee is written with its conditions attached, but a rate that is only visible after signup and a refund window that closes once files have been downloaded are both things to know before paying.

Who JobStep is for

JobStep fits an active applicant sending versions of the same resume to different employers and wanting the tailoring, the letter and the record of what went where handled in one place. The country-specific build also helps anyone applying outside the market they were educated in, where expectations about length, photo and section order differ from what they were taught.

It is a weaker fit for a job seeker applying to a handful of roles through people they already know, where a conversation and a referral do more than a rewritten document. The country rules also assume a conventional application, so a candidate whose route in is a portfolio or a round of interviews will find less here to work with.

Frequently asked questions

Is the free plan enough to finish a resume?
Yes. The score, the AI resume creation, every template and the tracker sit on it, and a finished resume can be exported as a PDF without paying. The paid side adds the work that repeats job by job, which is the rewrite against each advert and the letters that go with it, plus downloads without a cap.
What happens to the resume I upload?
It is stored in EU regions and processed through the language models named in the security policy, under agreements that keep uploaded content out of model training. You can edit or delete it from the dashboard, and deleting the account starts a removal process that also clears the copies held in routine backups.
Does the resume work for countries outside the United States?
The build carries the structure and level of detail the company keeps for a target market, and it names Germany, the United States and Switzerland as places where those expectations differ. The job suggestions are a separate feature and are not available everywhere.
Is the rewritten resume invented for me?
No. The rewrite is drawn from the answers you gave when the resume was built, and every change is presented for approval before it is applied. The company's own guidance is that the candidate stays responsible for the finished content, so anything that reads as though a machine wrote it is yours to cut in the editor.

Our verdict

The paid tier is worth testing once the free one has shown you a score you trust, because tailoring is where the money goes and the only way to judge it is to read one rewritten version against the advert it was written for. What no tool decides is the conversation that follows. JobStep can make the document match the posting, and the person who has to answer questions about it is still the one applying.

Not for you if you want the application handled end to end. Every suggestion still needs a decision from the person whose career it describes.
